Claudio Echeverri’s loan dilemma deepens as Manchester City weighs January recall

By Footbalio

The Claudio Echeverri loan case is at a decisive point where the teenager has considered leaving his home country of Bayer Leverkusen in January with limited participation.

A recall is an option that is currently being considered by Manchester City as they look to have a better avenue of development for the much-rated midfielder.

In August, Echeverri was loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen on a season basis by Manchester City, and the loan was to expire in June 2026. The 19-year-old has not been able to achieve the expectations and has barely been able to play regular minutes, appearing in half of the games in Leverkusen this season.

This is due to the fact that the player has not been assured of regular playing time, which has led to frustration among the player’s camp of the player and the City officials, who had hoped to see the player playing in a more prominent role.

It is reported that Echeverri feels that he needs to make a January transfer to continue the momentum at a very important stage of his development.

City added a recall clause into the agreement that allowed them to have full control in case things were not getting better. That is a clause that is currently under serious consideration since the club has become competitive exposure-oriented rather than squad depth at Leverkusen.

Although there have been earlier reports in Argentina indicating the possible reversion to River Plate, City has been decisive on the choice to date. The champions of the Premier League would like to see Echeverri further his studies in Europe and, hopefully, in a league that would support their own tactics.

Girona have become the strongest choice, negotiations are underway on a loan until the season is over. Several credible journalists, such as Fabrizio Romano and Catalan journalist Nil Solà, have reported that negotiations are ongoing as of December 17.

The player has also been reported to endorse a transfer to Girona FC with manager Míchel, as La Liga has been seen as a place of minutes. The structure of Girona is known to the city executives and is development-oriented, which raises the chances of long-term engagement.

This re-evaluation of a loan by Claudio Echeverri is a reflection of some of the earlier successes of the City Football Group, such as European destinations of Savinho and Yan Couto. Those illustrate the reasons why City are still hesitating to authorise a South American reprisal at this point.

There is no final agreement achieved yet, although the discussions are taking place and moving forward. In the case that the Claudio Echevarria loan to Girona is done, it would provide a clean sheet and hopefully crucial playing time prior to the close of the season.
