Niclas Fullkrug’s West Ham exit is imminent as the German striker gears up to leave on loan in January so as to rekindle his international ambitions. The 32-year old is seeking routine football following a poor run in London, which has plunged his world cup dreams.
West Ham United has pushed forward to the margins this season after constant injury issues and minimal contribution upon being fit. He has not adapted since coming to the club in 2024, since he came in as a transplant of Borussia Dortmund, as he has not scored this campaign after scoring three goals in 29 appearances in total.
Now West Ham have reached an agreement in principle that will see Fullkrug join AC Milan on a straight loan until the season is finished. There is an option of buying involved in the contract, and the club in Italy is likely to pay all his wages even during the temporary relocation.
Even though the previous reports indicated that Fullkrug preferred a re-entry to the Bundesliga, he has chosen to use the Serie A to get back into shape. It increased the interest of Milan when they were restricted by injuries in their attacking options, and this gave the chance to an experienced centre-forward.
Milan are second in the Serie A following 15 games with only one point behind the top of the table, Inter, and have the second highest number of goals in the league. Although Christian Pulisic has been scoring the bulk of their goals, the club has lacked in central attacking positions as a result of the loss of Santiago Gimenez.
Signed by Christopher Nkunku, who joined Chelsea in the summer, the latter has still not scored in 11 matches in the league, making the strengthening of the team a necessity. Fullkrug is considered a short-term proposal who can provide the top physical presence and experience.
On the side of West Ham, the transfer is an avenue of cleaning up following an unproductive signing that has failed to bear fruit as expected. The club is ready to sell the striker so as to release the squad space and resources before they can do any more recruitment.
The Niclas Fullkrug West Ham departure also has an international motive, with the German coach Julian Nagelsmann having a preference for players who are sharp in the match. Fullkrug is a good scorer in major tournaments, which has allowed him to remain in the fray, though not when he is not playing on a regular basis.
On January 1, the January transfer window opens, and Fullkrug is supposed to travel to Italy in order to have a medical. Provided that they are properly done, the move presents him with a clear path to the reform and late case of the 2026 World Cup plans to Germany.
