The charge against Tottenham player Christian Romero has intensified the disciplinary issues in the club, as the Tottenham captain, who was dismissed against Liverpool, was charged by the Football Association. The ruling affirms that the Argentine defender is now susceptible to disproportionate punishment outside his automatic suspension.
The allegation concerns the actions of Romero, who had been sent off in Tottenham’s 2-1 home loss to Liverpool in the Premier League last weekend. According to the FA, the defender did not leave the field in time and acted in a confrontational and aggressive way towards the referee, John Brooks.
Romero received two yellow cards in a chaotic match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Firstly, he was booked on dissent after scoring a goal on a pass to Liverpool and then sent off in stoppage time after kicking out at Ibrahima Konaté as Spurs attempted to secure a late equaliser.
The sending off left Tottenham with nine players, as Xavi Simons had already been sent off after being reviewed by the VAR. The yellow card that Simons received for the fouling of Virgil van Dijk was changed to a red card, and this greatly changed the situation of the match.
The charge of Christian Romero FA is devoted to the events that appeared after the red card, but not to the challenge. The FA said that his response to the ruling violated rules that deal with player conduct in relation to match officials.
The red card has an inbuilt one-match penalty according to the rules of the Premier League. Therefore, on December 28, 2025, Romero will be absent in the next league match of Tottenham against Crystal Palace.
This charge of the FA implies that additional punishment is now available, such as a long-term ban or a fine, in case Romero is guilty. Before Friday, January 2, 2026, he has to give a response to the body.
Thomas Frank, the Tottenham head coach, responded to the incident after the game. He justified the level of competitiveness in Romero but said that he was angry at the decisions of the referees that caused him to be booked and dismissed.
The accusation of Christian Romero FA also details itself against the strong season of the defender. He has also received eight yellow and a red card and appeared 14 times in the current 2025-26 Premier League campaign.
The next move in the FA is expected of Tottenham as they gear up to important series of matches. The result of the charge will decide whether Romero will miss not only the match against Palace but also more, which will question the leadership and the depth of the defense of Spurs.
