Hansi Flick Critiques VAR After Barcelona are beaten 0-2 by Atletico Madrid in Barcelona vs. Atletico Madrid Champions League Quarter-Final.
On April 8, 2026, Barcelona lost a home game to Atletico Madrid 0-2 in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, Hansi Flick went on an attack against the VAR officials.
It was a night which had all. Drama. Controversy. And tragedy to one of the ambitious clubs of Europe.
The goals at Spotify Camp Nou were scored by Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth with Diego Simeone getting his first win at the redesigned Barcelona stadium, in the 14th game of the stadium. Barcelona have a huge mountain to climb in the second leg.
The Turning Point: Red Card Changes Everything of Cubarsi.
Most of the first half was spent with Barcelona having the upper hand. They pressed. They created. They were in charge.
Then came the time of change.
Only a few minutes to the break, Pau Cubarsi was sent off as a result of a VAR review of a foul committed on Giuliano Simeone who would otherwise have been on goal. It was a move that gave a complete twist to the tie.
Alvarez proceeded to castigate the hosts by scoring the best goal of the game; a free-kick of 25 yards in the top corner to put Atletico ahead to the break. The game had been dominated by Barcelona. But they went into the dressing room a goal down and a man short.
In the Second Half, Atletiko Doubles the lead.
After the break Barcelona was tremendous in character. They kept pushing. They kept creating. Nevertheless, they were playing the odds.
As Barcelona left space behind in pursuit of an equalizer, Atletiko took advantage of their numerical superiority when a Matteo Ruggeri cross was scored by substitute Alexander Sorloth to give them the second goal.
That was the killer blow. Two goals. Ten men. And a bench that was hardly contented.
At the end of the night, Barcelona had a better expected goals of 1.21 than Atletico with 0.45. They had the opportunities. They did not avail themselves of them. It is the ugly face of high-level European football.

Flick Rages at VAR: “Why Do We Have It?”
Hansi Flick held back not after the final whistle. He was calm. But he was clear.
In an interview with Movistar Plus, according to Marca, Flick told him:
“I don’t know about CubarsÃ’s sending off, it could be red or it couldn’t be. I’m not sure if he touches him enough. But the situation in which they touch the ball with their hand in the area — I don’t understand why VAR doesn’t come in. It’s normal to make mistakes, but this type of situation, why do we have VAR? It ought to be a fine and a second yellow, red.
This was the most evident of the night. Flick was not challenging his team. He was challenging the system.
His mentioned incident was during the 53rd minute. Atletico player Marc Pubill who had already been booked avoided the penalty of collecting a ball within his own goal when the goalie, Juan Musso, tossed the ball to Pubill, who was in his own penalty area as a result of a goal-kick.
The on-field referee waved play on. There was no intervention by VAR.
In the same situation, Tyrone Mings of Aston Villa was sent off at Club Brugges in the champions league in 2024. That angered Barcelona even more.
Christian Dingert, a German referee who was the official of the game did not summon the referee to the monitor. Flick, a German himself, commented sarcastically on the irony of it, stating that the VAR was German.
It was a time of crude frustration by a man who felt that his team had been deprived of a definite penalty and an opportunity to score two goals.
Flick Still Trusts in His Team.
Flick never gave up, but still angry. He remained positive to his message even after the final whistle.
They scored two goals and had a lot of quality and we lost but we had very good options. We are not going to give up.
That is the state of mind of a coach who never gave up. And Barcelona have still a chance–however slight.
What Next: The Second Leg in Madrid.
Barcelona now has to fly to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday, April 14, where they have to win by at least 2 goals to ensure that their dreams of winning the champions leagues do not go to waste.
It is a gigantic task. Atletico are masters at holding on to leads. It is this type of football that Simeone has based his whole career on.
The fact that they were able to reverse a 4-0 first-leg deficit by Atletico in the Copa del Rey in February to eventually lose the match 4-3 on aggregate gives Barcelona some confidence. They know how to retaliate. Whether they can do it on the biggest stage is the question.
Discipline will be key. It will all depend on implementation. Or another giant refereeing decision goes the wrong way of either of them in Madrid, you can be sure that there will be very strong emotions expressed by the managers on the two benches.
Barcelo are not completed. But their way was now a lot more difficult.
