Atletico Madrid Block Barcelona’s Move for Alexander Sorloth as Transfer Battle Intensifies

Barcelona’s summer striker hunt hits another wall — and this time, Atletico Madrid are making their position crystal clear.

Julian Alvarez is not sold and the club of Catalans had already been informed of this. At the moment, it is reported that Atletiko will not accept any Barcelona offers of Alexander Sorloth, either. The Spanish capital is clear that it cannot give any deal to their attackers to a direct domestic competitor.

Crisis of Barcelona Striker This Summer.

Barcelo are in a big problem in goals. Robert Lewandowski, who will reach 38 in the summer, rethinks his future. The Polish forward has been invited to a one-year contract extension, however, with a major cut in wages. There is still no consensus.
This indecisiveness has compelled Barcelona to act quickly in the transfer market.

Alvarez is still their main target. But Atletiko have stated that he is unnegotiable. The Argentine is thought to be the heart of Simeone attack and even huge offers will not open the door.
Barcelo had lost track of Alvarez, and instead sought out a cheaper option in Sorloth.

Why Barcelona Want Sorloth.

Sorloth has in fact been a nightmare to Barcelona in the last couple of seasons. The giant Norwegian forward has confronted them 15 times in succession in Real Sociedad, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid. He has scored seven goals and made three assists in those matches.

He is 1.95 metres in height. He is physical. He has been established in La Liga. And head coach Hansi Flick allegedly views him as a player who can assimilate instantly into his system. It was always going to be desirable to have a striker as imposing and experienced as Lewandowski.

Sorloth too has a release clause of approximately 35 million – a sum that is easily afforded by current European standards. That turned him out to be a viable financial choice to a club that was operating on a tight budget.

He has already scored 17 goals in 47 matches he has played in this season alone with Atletico. He even contributed to their 2-0 win in the quarter-final of the 2026 Champions League over Barcelona in April 2026.

Atletico’s Firm Refusal

Even though Barcelona have officially indicated to them that they are willing to buy Sorloth, Atletiko have no interest in selling him to Barcelona. There are various justifications in reports of this position.

First, Atletico just do not want to empower a direct opponent in La Liga. This has been long time policy – especially when Barcelona is involved. Second, Atletico need depth up front. Antoine Griezmann is going and the club needs to fill that experience. The loss of Sorloth simultaneously would make their attacking possibilities lengthened.

Third and most importantly, power here lies with Atletico. They need not sell. They are not under any financial pressure to be lured into negotiations. And Sorloth has two years of his contract.

Atletiko Stance Highlights:
  • Unwilling to sell to a direct competitor.
  • Sorloth had to pay Griezmann off.
  • No emergency to seek funds.
  • Would rather have him at the Metropolitano.
What are the Alternatives to Barcelona?

The club is said to have tried other alternatives. Mallorca has been referred to as Vedat Muriqi. The name of Victor Osimhen has also been mentioned but his pay is a different story in itself.

Manchester United has demanded too high a price on Marcus Rhasford, leading to a deal being cooled. With each story, Barcelona is losing its way to a top striker this summer.

The Bigger Picture

This case is indicative of the larger conflict between two of the largest clubs in Spain. Atletico do not often assist Barcelona in creating a more powerful team – and now they can just say no and mean it.

In the case of Barcelona, time is running out. It is just a few weeks before pre-season. An action against Lewandowski should be taken. And in case neither Alvarez nor Sorloth could be sourced by Atletiko, Flick and his recruitment team will have to look elsewhere to solve the problem – and soon.

The summer transfer window is not yet open. The battle lines are drawn, however.
