Real Madrid’s La Liga Title Race All But Over After 1-1 Draw With Girona

The LaLiga title hopes of Real Madrid are quickly waning since they were forced into a vexing 1-1 draw by a well-organized Girona team at the Santiago Bernabeu on Friday, April 10, 2026.

It was another hit to Los Blancos, and the blow came at the most delicate time of the week, which had already become a distressing one. The club was already rattled by a defeat in Mallorca and a defeat at home against Bayern Munich in the quarter final of the Champions League. A home loss to mid-table Girona now has extended their winless streak to three games in all competitions.
The arithmetic is getting tougher to deny.

Valverde Goes to the Ball, But Lemar Shuts Down the Bernabeu.

After the half time Federico Valverde scored a goal that made Madrid take the lead six minutes later. His long-range attempt was met by the net when Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga did not manage to take the shot in his hands.

It appeared that it could be the end of a bad week that Madrid had had. It wasn’t.
Thomas Lemar, only eleven minutes later, stepped up with a brilliant ball on the edge of the box and over Andriy Lunin in a hopeless attempt to stop it, and into the bottom corner. It was a finish of the highest quality. Girona was right, and the Bernabeu dropped his head.

There was a thoughtful pause on the part of Lemar.

I believe we got better as the game progressed. The first half was not that easy on us; the second half was easier on us as we came into the game. -Thomas Lemar.

That was the determining factor. Girona rose to the challenge, seized their opportunity and left Madrid without any trace of the years of supremacy.

A Game Madrid Wanted to win.

Madrid was controlling huge spells and always challenging the opponent defense. Paulo Gazzaniga was excellent in goal to hold Girona in the competition, saving a number of important shots, when he made his most expensive error by giving Valverde the opening goal.

Kylian Mbappe was nowhere a good player. He was in the wrong position several times, flunked a great opportunity in the box, and was evidently frustrated. It was one of the nights that the French superstar will soon forget.

The last ray of hope to the hosts was Vinicius Junior. He was unpredictable, had a number of fouls and put the keeper to the test a few times. But the crucial contribution never came.

Towards the end of the match, Madrid believed that they had been cheated out of a penalty. Full time Coach Alvaro Arbeloa was enraged.

It is a fine, here, and on the moon. No one knows.

The referee and VAR were at variance. The draw stood.

The Title Race: Numbers That Tell the Story.

Barcelo is the current leader of La Liga with 76 points out of 30 matches. In second place, Real Madrid are six points behind, playing a game more.

Should Barcelona beat Espanyol in the derby on Saturday, the difference is increased to nine with only seven games to play. By this point the title race will be all but nominal.

The local audience expressed their emotions at the last whistle. The mood at the Bernabeu was seriously frustrating. The title might be slipping off each passing week, and supporters might feel it.

The Future of Real Madrid.

Madrid is losing its league, yet there is still a chance that Madrid will not die out in Europe. Los Blancos visit Bayern Munich on Wednesday to play the second leg of the quarter final in the champions league and they are one goal behind 2-1 in the first leg.

And that is where the season of Madrid has now really come. The city of Munich would at least be giving the club a reason to fight back as the domestic campaign draws to an end.

In the case of La Liga, time is running out. Three games without a win. Already one game played and six points off the top. The mathematics is inexorable.

Real Madrid require an almost flawless streak of performances. They must have Barcelona fall. And they must find the clinical, regular appearance with which they have not appeared in weeks.
There are seven games to be played and time is going by.

Next up in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg is Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich on Wednesday, April 16, 2026 in Munich.
